Card Blocking & Advanced Blocking

Sometimes, work gets stuck due to dependencies, issues, or external factors. In these cases, you can block a card in Kanban Zone so your team is aware of the status and reason for the blockage.

Only licensed users (Administrators and Collaborators) can block or unblock cards.

Blocking a Card

  1. Open the card you want to block.
  2. Scroll to the Block section.
  3. Type in your block reason.
  4. Click Block.

Once blocked:

  • The Block section header turns red.
  • The reason becomes uneditable.
  • You will see:
    • Blocked: shows the date, time, and user who blocked the card.
    • Last Edited: shows when and by whom the block was last updated.

How Blocked Cards Look on the Board

  • A solid red banner appears across the card.
  • The banner shows the block icon and the block reason.

Unblocking a Card

  1. Open the blocked card.
  2. Go to the Block section.
  3. Click Unblock.

Once unblocked:

  • The Blocked: field shows N/A.
  • The Last Edited: field remains, showing when the block was last updated.

Advanced Blocking (Professional & Portfolio Plans Only)

With Advanced Blocking, you can categorize, track, and follow up on blockers in more detail.

Blocking a Card with Advanced Options

Follow the same steps as above, plus additional fields:

  • Blocked Time – shows how long the card has been blocked.
  • Type – pick a category (e.g., Legal, Vendor, Security) with its own color and icon.
  • Severity – indicate seriousness (High, Medium, Low). Each severity can carry a reporting weight.
  • Reminder Date – set a follow-up date. If the card stays blocked past this date, you’ll get an alert.

Customizing Advanced Blocking

Admins can configure these options in Organization Settings > Card Blocking.

There you can:

  • Show/Hide Fields – decide which fields (Type, Severity, Reason, Reminder Date) appear on cards.
  • Require Fields – make specific fields mandatory before a card can be blocked.
  • Normal Block – disable all advanced fields to use a standard block.

How Advanced Blocks Look on the Board

  • If a Type is chosen, the banner will use that type’s color and icon.
  • The banner can also display:
    • Block reason
    • Severity
    • Reminder date
  • If you don’t want these details shown, simply hide or unrequire the fields in settings.
